Products to Support Your GLP-1 Journey

Unlike other weight loss programs, you don’t NEED anything to lose weight on a GLP-1. But here are a few items that might help!

Unlike other weight loss programs, you don’t NEED anything to lose weight or improve your blood sugar on a GLP-1 medication. It is not like other diet programs that make you purchase various powders, supplements, or teas to help you lose weight.

You can be successful on your GLP-1 by just purchasing regular food with a focus on protein and high fiber fruits and vegetables.

But there are several products that can make it easier to reach your health (and protein) goals. Here are some of the products we recommend:

(I put them all in one place, plus a few other favorites for you on Amazon here.)

Protein

Getting enough protein while on a GLP-1 is essential to prevent muscle loss while losing weight. While you can meet your protein needs with real food, sometimes you aren’t able to eat enough to meet those goals. Protein powders and high protein snacks can help. Here are a few to consider:

High quality protein supplements

There are many options for protein powders on the market. The one you prefer likely depends on your individual preferences and lifestyle. I personally like premixed options, as I don’t often have time for powders. But if you want to add ingredients or personalize the taste, a powder would be a better option.

A few that I like:

Powders that are a good choice:

If you have a sensitive stomach to protein powders, I highly recommend Drink Wholesome which is made with limited ingredients for sensitive stomachs.

When I just can’t stomach anything else, I turn to Vital Proteins Collagen in my coffee. It dissolves completely and is tasteless in any beverage you add it to. While collagen isn’t considered a “complete” protein (it is missing the amino acid tryptophan), it can help you get in at least something when you don’t feel like eating. It just shouldn’t be your ONLY source of protein for the day.

I also recently discovered this collagen powder beverage with 10 grams of collagen protein called Neotin. It has electrolytes in it and a light strawberry lemonade flavor. It can be another way you get your protein for the day.

Protein snacks

Having some high protein grab-and-go snacks can really help you meet those needs. I always try to have string cheese or Greek yogurt in the fridge.

If you need a non-refrigerated option you can take with you, here are a few favorites;

Chomps meat sticks with up to 12 grams of protein per stick. If you can’t stomach the whole thing, they also have small versions called Chomplings with 4 grams of protein.

If you prefer a salty, crunchy snack, consider these Quest protein chips or roasted edamame (which will help you get your fiber too!). I also absolutely love these Biocare bars. They are REALLY tasty.

Kitchen Must-Haves

Once again you don’t need any specific tools or equipment to lose weight on GLP-1, but there are certain kitchen gadgets that might help.

I love my single serving blender, which makes protein shakes effortless with much less cleaning, and you can take the cup on the go.

I can’t live without a good water cup. This Iron Flask is my current favorite. It keeps ice frozen and coffee hot for a LONG time. I also like this mininoo version that comes in a ton of different colors.

This veggie chopper makes chopping vegetables incredibly easy.

Supplements and Medical Supplies

I don’t recommend any specific supplements on a GLP-1, with the exception of maybe a multivitamin just to ensure you get your daily needs met. Premenopausal women have different nutrient needs than men or post-menopausal women. To ensure you are getting everything you need, it is best to take a multivitamin tailored to your sex and age.

Here are two I recommend:

Metagenics Phyto Multi with Iron– for premenopausal women

Metagenics Phyto Multi without Iron– for men and post-menopausal women

Budget option:

NatureMade Multi with iron – for premenopausal women

NatureMade Multi for Him– for men

NatureMade Multi for Her 50+– for post-menopausal women

They also have the same product in a gummy version if that is better tolerated. Here is the women’s version, and here is the men’s

Skin firming cream: Some people struggle with loose skin after significant weight loss, this will likely depend on your age, genetics, and how much weight you lose. But a cream like this, when used regularly, can help.

Medical Supplies

There are a few over-the-counter items that can help ease side effects. These recommendations are NOT medical advice. Always speak to your doctor about the best way to manage your side effects and what they recommend.

Must have for all GLP-1 users: Sterile alcohol pads. It is important to sterilize the area before giving yourself an injection.

My favorite GLP-1 travel case because it holds your meds at a consistent temperature, not like the cases with ice packs that slowly warm up. I love to travel so it’s important to me to keep my meds at the right temperature.

Nausea/Diarrhea

  • Advanced herbal ginger chews: These ginger chews can help relieve nausea.
  • Pepto Bismol: when I feel like I overate (easy to do on GLP-1) I pop one of these to ease that discomfort. It also helps relieve diarrhea when I change dosages.
  • Tums: Tums can help relieve heartburn if you feel like you overate.

Constipation

  • Metamucil: If you are struggling to get your fiber in and are experiencing constipation, a fiber supplement can help.
  • Miralax: If you need something stronger for constipation, Miralax is my go-to for an unflavored powder to add to your beverages.

Fitness

When you are on a GLP-1 you have to work out, with a particular focus on strength training. If you don’t you are more likely to lose lean body mass, which will slow down your metabolism making weight maintenance next to impossible.

I prefer to attend a strength training class a few days a week, but you need to do whatever works for you where you can remain consistent. If you prefer to exercise at home, I recommend the following equipment:
